Circumcision

HughCircumcision is a procedure that removes the sleeve of skin (foreskin) which covers the tip of the penis (glans). Sometimes it is necessary for a boy to be circumcised for medical reasons or the decision to circumcise may be for social or religious reasons. This is a personal choice made by parents and circumcision is an operation that Dr Henry is happy to discuss with you and to perform at the request of parents.

Dr Henry's policy is to circumcise boys after the age of 6 months under a general anaesthetic in a hospital. The reason for this is that he can achieve a good cosmetic result when the children are a little older and the child has minimal pain. Circumcision is a day only procedure.

An initial consultation can be arranged once your child is 3 months old and the operation scheduled once he is 6 months old.

In March 2006 the NSW Department of Health changed its policy on circumcisions in public hospitals. They now can only be done in a public hospital if they are medically warranted (e.g. the child has recurrent infections).

Circumcisions for social or religious reasons can only be performed in a private hospital.

Dr Henry will need to see the child and his parent(s) for an initial consultation prior to any surgical procedure. If you wish to go ahead with the surgery as a private patient you will then receive a quote for the cost.

Medically indicated circumcisions

If your son needs to be circumcised for medical reasons then you can opt to have the surgery performed in a private hospital or a public hospital.

Private Hospital: If you opt to have the surgery in a private hospital then you will be a private patient and can schedule the operation on a date that suits both you and Dr Henry. You will receive a quote for the cost after your initial consultation. You will need to see Dr Henry for a post-operative check to make sure all is well 4 weeks after the date of surgery. This visit is free of charge.

Public Hospital: You can be a public patient or a private patient in a public hospital. However you will be on a waiting list with patient surgery performed in order of clinical priority. If you opt to be a private patient then you are guaranteed that Dr Henry will perform the surgery and you will receive a quote for the cost after your initial consultation.

Should you elect to be admitted as a public patient in a public hospital you are not guaranteed that Dr Henry will perform the surgery, it is usually performed by a trainee surgeon (known as a registrar). There will be no cost involved if you choose this option.

You will need to see Dr Henry for a post-operative check to make sure all is well 4 weeks after the date of surgery. If you are a public patient there will be a postoperative fee for this visit.
